The National Fire Protection Association defines ignitable liquids as “any liquid or the liquid phase of any material that is capable of fueling a fire….”[NFPA 921-2017] It includes traditional products such as gasoline, mineral spirits, xylenes, brush cleaners, and diesel. It also includes non-traditional liquids which contain fatty acids such as stains and oils. Our analysts are trained in ASTM International methods to extract and characterize ignitable liquids from both debris and liquid submissions.
Fatty acids are found in products such as stains, cooking and massage oils and some “green” product. When found as a bulk liquid they are generally regarded as safe. However, under specific conditions, they can generate heat and cause fires. If you suspect a fire is the result of a self-heating process, we can test material for the presence of fatty acids. We can also test products to determine if they are capable of self-heating.
Vehicle fluids vary by chemical composition and color. We can help you determine if a sample is a coolant, windshield washer fluid, transmission fluid, brake fluid, motor oil, or a mixture of fluids. Less than an ounce of fluid is necessary to perform a variety of tests.
